Planning a bespoke cabinetry project is exciting, but it’s also a significant investment.
Whether you’re renovating a single room, building a new home or looking for a better way to use your space, taking the time to plan properly will almost always lead to a better result.
Some of the best projects I’ve worked on haven’t started with detailed plans at all. They’ve started with a conversation, a rough sketch or simply an idea of what wasn’t working in the home.
Here are seven things I’d encourage every homeowner to think about before commissioning custom cabinetry.
1. Think About What Isn’t Working
Before we talk about materials, colours or finishes, I want to understand what isn’t working in the room.
Where do things usually end up? What do you wish worked better? What’s missing?
The answers to those questions often shape the design far more than the room’s dimensions.
Good cabinetry should solve problems as well as look great.
2. Consider What You Need to Store
One of the biggest advantages of bespoke cabinetry is that it can be designed around the things you already own.
Books.
Appliances.
Children’s toys.
Sporting equipment.
Office supplies.
Collectables.
Rather than trying to make everything fit into standard cupboards, bespoke cabinetry allows storage to be tailored specifically to your needs.
Thinking about these things early helps create cabinetry that’s genuinely useful from day one.
3. Think Beyond Today
It’s easy to design a room around the way you use it today.
It’s often worth thinking about how your needs might change in five or ten years’ time.
Will the kids need more storage?
Will a spare room become a home office?
Are you planning to stay in the home long-term?
Planning for the future can help ensure your cabinetry continues to work well as your lifestyle changes.
4. Collect Ideas You Like
You don’t need to have all the answers before we meet.
In fact, many clients arrive with a collection of photos they’ve saved online, pictures from magazines or screenshots on their phone.
That’s incredibly helpful.
It doesn’t mean we’ll copy those ideas, but it gives me a much better understanding of the styles, materials and finishes you’re naturally drawn to.
5. Set a Realistic Budget
Custom cabinetry is an investment, and no two projects are exactly alike.
The size of the project, the materials you choose and the level of detail involved all influence the final cost.
Having an honest conversation about your budget from the beginning allows me to recommend options that deliver the best value without compromising the overall result.
It’s never about spending more than you need to.
It’s about making informed decisions and creating something you’ll be happy with for many years.
6. Trust Experience
One of my favourite parts of the job is walking into a home and spotting opportunities the homeowner hasn’t even noticed.
Sometimes a small layout change creates far better storage.
Sometimes removing a cupboard makes the room feel bigger.
Sometimes there’s a completely different solution that nobody had considered.
Experience isn’t about having all the answers.
It’s about recognising opportunities and helping you get the very best out of your space.
7. Don’t Rush the Planning
Good cabinetry takes time.
The planning stage is where the biggest decisions are made, and it’s much easier to adjust a drawing than it is to change cabinetry once it’s built.
Taking the time to refine the layout, choose the right materials and consider how the room needs to function is one of the best investments you can make.
A little extra planning at the beginning often leads to years of enjoyment afterwards.
